They say writing a book is the hardest part. But as a professional used to the precision of financial models, I did not expect my greatest adversary to be my beautiful double page spread and the invisible MEDIABOX.
I thought an upgrade to Adobe Pro and a simple crop would be the way to split my double page spread into single pages for print. Yet, the PDF is a stubborn keeper of secrets. To the eye, the page looked split. But to the printer, the "ghost" of the other half of the image remained, causing file submission issues. One common solution is to "Print to PDF," but this caused a significant deterioration in colour quality for my file.
It took me three months of research, but I finally found the secret button in Adobe Pro that solves this without sacrificing a single pixel of beauty. If that sounds like the problem you are facing, I hope this note saves you the months of frustration I endured.
Step 1: The Initial Cut
Crop your double-page spread into a single page using the "Crop" function in Adobe Pro. Draw your crop area as you normally would.

Step 2: Aligning the Cosmetic Boxes
Double-click inside the crop area to open the "Set page boxes" view. Adjust the margins to your desired area and—crucially—set the margins for the CropBox, ArtBox, BleedBox, and TrimBox to be identical for all pages. Click "OK." Note: At this stage, the PDF is only hiding the excess; the MediaBox is still holding onto the full image.

Step 3: Enter Print Production
Navigate to "All tools" and select "Use print production."

Step 4: Open Preflight
Select "Preflight" from the Print Production menu.

Step 4: Find the Fixup Button
Go to "Options" within the Preflight window and select "Create fixup."

Step 5: Create the Surgical Fix
Under "Fixup category," choose "Pages."
Under "Type of fixup," select "Set page geometry boxes."
Under "Set pagebox", choose "Set MediaBox" and under "Dimension based on," select "CropBox." Ensure all margins are set to zero. Click "OK" to save this new rule.

Final Step: Running the Fix
Return to the Preflight window and click the Wrench icon. Select your newly created Fixup and click "Fix." Adobe will prompt you to save the file. Once saved, the artwork outside the crop area is permanently discarded!
